I work with growing businesses where a lack of capability and confidence in their managers means a lot still ends up landing back on the desks of senior leaders. Questions that could be answered lower down get escalated. Small issues grow bigger, unnecessarily and Leaders find themselves pulled into situations they thought their managers would handle.
Most of the time this happens because people have stepped into management roles without much structured support. They are decent people who were rewarded for being great at their job by being promoted to look after others, then left to figure it out for themselves.
Things like holding a tough conversation, setting clear expectations, dealing with dips in performance or making confident decisions can feel uncertain, so issues drift back up to the senior leaders instead, or just don’t get dealt with at all.
My work focuses on strengthening that management layer so the business runs more smoothly day to day. I run structured management and leadership development programmes and work directly with the organisation’s managers. We focus on the practical parts of leadership that show up every week: how to set direction clearly, how to step in early when performance or behaviour isn’t where it needs to be, how to delegate properly, how to coach people to improve, and how to handle the conversations managers often put off.#
When managers handle these situations earlier and more consistently, the difference is noticeable. Senior leaders spend less time firefighting and more time focusing on the growth and direction of the business. Performance becomes more consistent and good people are more likely to stay.
Over time, the business stops relying on a handful of individuals and starts benefiting from capable leadership at every level.
